![]() During the heyday of new wave, Lowe co-led the raucous Rockpile with Dave Edmunds, with the pair regularly appearing on each other's solo albums into the early 1980s. His rough, ragged production style earned him the nickname "Basher" and also established the amateurish, D.I.Y. label Stiff Records, where he helmed seminal records by the Damned and Elvis Costello he'd later also work with the Pretenders. After Brinsley Schwarz split, Lowe aligned himself with punk and new wave, serving as the house producer for the D.I.Y. Heavily influenced by the Band, the Brinsleys were at the forefront of a British back-to-basics rock & roll that eventually mutated into punk rock. Lowe started his career as the nominal leader of Brinsley Schwarz, a ragged collection of hippies that helped create the pub rock circuit of the early 1970s. A singer/songwriter of considerable grace and wit, Nick Lowe pioneered pub rock and punk, then settled into a dignified third act as an elegant crooner. ![]()
